Welcome to Module 1 of the NRCS Learning Series.

This training introduces participants to the concept of soil health and explains why soil is one of our most important natural resources. Through this module, participants will explore the role of soil in agriculture, plant growth, water retention, and environmental sustainability. This lesson is designed to help youth, educators, and community participants better understand the importance of protecting and improving soil.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Define soil health in simple terms

  • Explain why healthy soil is important for growing plants and crops

  • Understand how soil supports water retention, nutrients, and root growth

  • Recognize how conservation and sustainable agriculture practices help protect soil

  • Describe ways students, gardeners, and communities can help improve soil health
